Maggie Fuller, Practice Manager of the Health Center at Helping Hands, happily displays her “diploma” and class photo presented to her for completing the Leadership Rockwall program. The mission of Leadership Rockwall is to identify and motivate emerging leaders and develop their potential for community leadership by introducing them to the realities, opportunities and challenges of the Rockwall civic and business communities. “It was such an amazing experience,” Ms. Fuller said. “I have a better understanding of what makes Rockwall the special place that it is.”

Local Students donate to Food Pantry

Students of the Center for Career Training in Rockwall bring toiletries they collected and donated to Rockwall County Helping Hands. They are, from left: Sheila Williams, Anastasia Madrid, Charla Turner, Mary Mannon, Mary MacLean and Tekisha Fowler. The center offers medical, office and professional certificate programs. It is approved and regulated by the Texas Workforce Commission, Career Schools and Colleges Section.

Girl Scouts Go Green

Girl Scout Troop 8967 participated in the Forever Green Take Action Project by making bags from tee-shirts for use in packing food for Helping Hands clients of the Food Pantry.

They joined Girl Scouts around the world in learning the effects of waste on our environment and discovering ways to reduce waste. They also worked to reduce the number of discarded single-use plastic bottles and bags and to increase the aluminum recycling rates.

“We are so pleased that these girls selected Helping Hands as part of their project,” said Mrs. Hamm. “The bags are wonderful – and so creative!”

Troop 8967 is a multi-level troop in Rockwall with 34 girls from kindergarten to high school.

Post office food drive this Saturday, May 12th

Rockwall County U.S. Postal Service employees will pick up more than letters this Saturday, May 12th: They will be collecting food for the Rockwall County Helping Hands Food Pantry. Residents can leave nonperishable food, beside their mailboxes before regular mail pick-up time, in bags that postal employees are delivering to your mailboxes this week. Suggestions for food items to donate include sugar, flour, oil, canned meat and canned fruit. Fill a bag with food and bring hope to someone in need this Saturday, May 12th!

Helping Hands participates in Relay for Life

Members of the Helping Hands Relay for Life team were: Marsha Chapman, Susan Cook and Sherry and Paul Hamm. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It was a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs. “We dedicated our efforts to clients coming to Helping Hands for assistance, patients receiving care at The Health Center, customers shopping in the Thrift Stores and friends and relatives fighting cancer,” said Mrs. Hamm, the non-profit agency’s Director of Assistance and Referral.

Harbor Lights Maiden Voyage benefits Helping Hands

The Harbor Lights, the newest venture of Scott and Jan Self, was filled with supporters and friends of Rockwall County Hands Saturday night. Guests enjoyed a spectacular sunset on Lake Ray Hubbard and even more beautiful moon rise during a three hour cruise on the eastern shore of Lake Ray Hubbard.

This was the maiden voyage for the Harbor Lights and Captain Scott, aided by first mate Jan, led the guests in a rousing Christening ceremony with champagne toasts by all.

The successful fundraiser was catered by restaurant Ava.

A Play for Food benefits Helping Hands Food Pantry

Rockwall Summer Musicals is excited about their 2012 partnership with Rockwall County Helping Hands and A Play for Food in an effort to collect donations for and increase awareness of ways to help feed the hungry locally. Although most food drives are associated with the holidays, Rockwall Summer Musicals is dedicating its entire summer season to these efforts and invites you to participate. Donation links are provided on their website and can be added to your ticket purchases. Additionally, donation receptacles and “round up” opportunities at our box office and concession stand will reward you, not only with the joy of helping feed the hungry, but with a specially designed silicone bracelet that will identify you as donor to the food pantry program. Helping Hands honors volunteers

More than 80 volunteers of Rockwall County Helping Hands were honored recently for their service to the non-profit critical assistance agency.

Welcome to our annual celebration of you,” said Executive Director Margo Nielsen, welcoming the agency’s volunteers to the luncheon at Culpepper’s Steak House. “You make our agency work.”

Helping Hands volunteers are a varied group of giving people. They include: young and old, professional and blue collar workers, generous supporters and former clients and men and women that are retired or working part-time.

“When one considers the programs that are carried out so successfully that involve providing assistance to so many clients – whether it be help with utilities, shelter, food or Christmas toys – it is clearly evident that our staff couldn’t even come close to meeting these needs without the cadre of volunteers that are a part of the assistance program,” said Sherry Hamm, the agency’s director of Assistance and Referral.

Helping Hands volunteers are an invaluable resource to the agency and its assistance program, the Health Center and the Centcible Thrift Stores. Their incredible value isn’t measured in dollars alone, but in the hours of work and support they provide on a wide-range of projects requiring their time, talents and energy.

During the luncheon, the group was treated to a performance by members of the Rockwall Summer Musicals and to a moving talk by guest speaker Tim Whitney, founder of the non-profit A Play for Food. Whitney is collaborating with members of the Rockwall Summer Musicals through A Play for Food to benefit the Helping Hands Food Pantry.
